Turf Tip: Does ice melt directly harm surfaces when it is used?

No. The real damage to concrete comes from water seeping into it and then refreezing. Water is absorbed by concrete and accumulates. When the water freezes, it expands, causing pressure to build up. The increased pressure will eventually become too much and will damage the concrete. Poor quality concrete, or less than a year old is most vulnerable.

Dollar Spot Eliminators

If the recent heavy snowfalls are any indication, we may be heading for an above average winter snow accumulation. That is the prediction from a number of outlets, including the Old Farmer’s Almanac and NOAA. 

While that means more time spent plowing, hopefully it will also have a calming affect for turf managers. Snow cover has an incredible temperature regulating capacity. It will protect turf from the harsh temperatures and desiccating winds that winter brings.

The winter also provides time to take some well-deserved time off, declutter offices, formulate plans for next season, and research new products and processes. 

We have a number of new products that will be available for next growing season. Three of those new products focus on the main disease culprit is this area, dollar spot. 

ArmorTech® Rotator™ is a post-patent formulation of fluazinam (Secure™). Rotator is a multi-site mode of action contact fungicide that offers excellent control of dollar spot while managing resistance.

Pinpoint™ is the new strobilurin fungicide from NuFarm®. It offers excellent dollar spot control as well as being a unique rotational partner for managing resistance to other chemical family fungicides (SDHI, DMI, dicarboximides).

Exteris™ Stressgard® is a new combination fungicide from Bayer®.  It features an SDHI active ingredient (fluopyram) and an established Qoi companion (trifloxystrobin) as well as the proven Stressgard technology. This combination provides a broad spectrum of disease control and plant health benefits.
