Turf Tip: Stopping Ice Formation on Turf

Ice formation on turf during winter can have deleterious effects.  Anything that can help reduce standing water on turf during the winter is worth looking at.  A few options to consider:
  • Apply wetting agents prior to the onset of winter to help water infiltrate into the soil quicker.
  • Create drainage channels that move water off and away from the green surface.  These areas are commonly towards the front of greens and near collars.  The difference in mowing height from green to collar creates a barrier that increases the time it takes for water to runoff the surface.  Strip sod in these areas and direct them towards the surrounds, ideally towards a catch basin.
  • Some greens have "bowls" that are prone to collecting and retaining water.  Consider removing a cup plug(s) in these areas.  This will allow the water to move from the surface into the vacated cup plug.
  • Add catch basins to low spots on fairways.
If you have not noticed a theme, drainage is key!
